Hebrews 2

Hebrews 2

1-3 – Warning To Pay Attention

1We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

2For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,

3how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

Notes: Sinning against the gospel is neglect of our salvation…it is contempt of the saving grace of Christ. One of our greatest concerns in life should be to pay attention to gospel and it’s principles directions, to prize them as matters of the great importance, to listen to them diligently at every opportunity, to read them frequently, to meditate on them closely, and to base our faith around them. We should embrace the bible and it’s principles on our hearts and affections, retain them in our memories, and finally regulate our words and actions according them.

Sinning against the gospel is described as “neglect of this great salvation”. It is a contempt put upon the saving grace of God in Christ, making light of it, not caring for it, not thinking it worth our while to acquaint ourselves with it, not regarding either the worth of gospel grace or our own want of it and undone state without it. It is not using our actions to show the truth of it, or to discern the goodness of it, or to apply it to ourselves. This is how we show a plain neglect of our great salvation. We should all feel a little tug or warning inside ourselves that we won’t be found among the wicked wretched sinners who neglect the grace of the gospel.

17-18 – Atonement

17For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Notes: We should not expect help from the world, or human devices, but we should seek pardon, peace, grace, and a lively hope of heaven, by faith in Him who died and rose again, that we may rise above the fear of death. The remembrance of His own sorrows and temptations makes Christ mindful of the trials of his people, and ready to help them. He is ready and willing to help those of us who are tempted and seek him. Because He himself became man and was tempted so He might be every way qualified to help us…unlike us thought He continued perfectly free from sin.
