2 Timothy 3
2-5 – Godlessness All Around Us
2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
Notes: “having a form of godliness” – Meaning people will put on an external show of religion; they will pretend that they are righteous and holy. They will put on a show in front of others by disguising themselves with a mask of godliness.
“denying its power” – These people will profess Christianity and godliness, but the fear of God and the pure worship of Him in their hearts and in their actions will be denied.
12-13 –You Will Be Persecuted By Living A Christian Life
12In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
13while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Notes: “will be persecuted” – It is the will of God and was foretold by Christ that we will be persecuted. Just as Christ suffered it himself it is necessary that we should as well so we may be conformed into His likeness.
“will go from bad to worse” – The Christian church is never going to get better, it is going to get worse; The church will eventually be inhabited with devils, all sorts of foul spirits, and it will be the cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
16-17 – Scripture Is Useful In Every Circumstance
16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Notes: The Bible is our sure guide to eternal life. It is useful as a tool to teach, correct, and reprimand. I pray we all grow to love our Bibles more so we can see how truly beneficial it can be in our lives. Our Bible can help us learn how to grasp the true happiness that was promised to us by faith in Christ.
