1 Timothy 6
6-7 – Contentment With What You Have Been Given
6But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
Note: All truly godly people are content.
9-10 – Love Of Money
9People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Notes: We can have money, and not love it; but if we love it, we may be pushed into all sorts of evil. Every sort of wickedness and vice, in one way or another, grows from the love of money. We cannot look around without seeing so much proof of this, especially in a day of outward prosperity, great expenses, and loose profession.
11-12 – Pursue The Virtues
11But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
12Fight the good fight of the faith.
Notes: Men of God should be taken up with gaining the virtues of God. We must have a conflict with corruption, and temptations, and the powers of darkness in our hearts.
17-19 – Commands To The Rich
17Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
18Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
19In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
Notes: Being rich (like us) in this world is completely different from being rich in the knowledge of God and a relationship with him. There is nothing more uncertain than worldly wealth. Those who are rich should acknowledge that God gave them their riches. Only the Lord can give someone the ability to enjoy there wealth richly. Because many people are rich monetarily, but they do not enjoy their wealth and don’t even have a heart to use their wealth for good. The rich (us) should show our faith in Christ by fruits of love and oppose the views of the self-indulgent, covetous, and ungodly around who lift up their eyes in torment.
