1 Timothy 3
2-7 – Attributes Of The Elder
2be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
4must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect.
5must not be a recent convert
6must also have a good reputation with outsiders
Notes: -The KJV uses the word “bishop” instead of “overseer”.
-The KJV uses the word “blameless” instead of the phrase “above reproach” – meaning irreproachable, blameless, unrebukeable. Basically, they had not been found guilty of any notorious crime or able to be held guilty of the rules set up in verses 2 thru 7.
-The elder’s were to teach and preach, to direct the affairs of the church, to “pastor” the flock of God, and to guard the church from error.
8-12 – Attributes Of The Deacon And His Wife
8are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain
9must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.
10must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
11their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy
12must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.
Notes: – The “Deacons” responsibility was to free the elders, so they could give full attention to prayer and the ministry of the word. Definition – one who cares for the poor and has charge of and distributes the money collected for their use; or a waiter, one who serves food and drink
